Our feature supplier this month is Maple Heart Crafts, I am so excited to introduce you to Calindy. I sat down with Calindy to ask her a few questions about herself and her small business. I sure hope you enjoy learning more about her.
Calindy and I met a few years ago through a mutual friend. She is an awesome person who continually surprises me with her creativity. I really enjoyed doing this interview as I learned so much. I hope you enjoy reading it as well.
I will now let Calindy answer the questions in her own words.
My name is Calindy! I am a busy bee with three jobs: I teach music during the day six days a week - from Sunday to Thursday I teach in-home, and on Thursday and Friday I also teach in-studio; I work for Canada Post by night, and I make handmade quality items to sell on Thea-Bel! I have been married for five years to a wonderful Romanian man named Ticu! [they are the most adorable couple]
How did you come up with your name?
My American friend, Deazel, and I sat down one night and brainstormed names. I wanted it to sound warm, cozy, filled with love, and Canadian! We went through several variations of the name (Maple HeARTS, Maple Hearts and Crafts, Maple Heart Knitting, Maple Heart Yarn Arts, Maple Heart Crochet, Maple Heart Designs) before finally settling on Maple Heart Crafts.
What attracted you to making what you do?
I want people to feel warm and loved, especially if/when they were feeling down and lonely. I want them to know that someone out there would always be there and that they weren't ever truly alone. My Grandma has been knitting since she was about four years old and she always makes beautiful love-filled items for everyone. I want to take that wonderful feeling of love and comfort that I get when she makes things for me and share that with others who may not get to experience that feeling very often.
How long have you been making your creations?
I've been crafting since the age of 12, when my Grandma taught me how to knit.
How do you decide what to create?
I usually go online and search Pinterest, Ravelry, Michaels, and YouTube. I also have a lot of email subscriptions to various crafting companies, so those will inspire me too.
When I'm looking for something to create, I look for things that "speak" to me or things that connect to my heart. My motto has always been, "if I don't like it then why would you?" meaning: if I don't like making something, it won't have that feeling of love, warmth, and comfort, so why would you like receiving it?
Any big plans for new items?
Hopefully, once inspirations hits.
What do you hope people get from your items?
Love, comfort, warmth, feeling, etc.
Do you have a favorite product that you have created?
This Scarf [All I can say is wow!!!!!]
What is your favorite product created by someone else on Thea-Bel?
The book earrings! They're genius and so cute! Imagine, wearing tiny books! I wish I had a pair made with sheet music on the inside. [good idea, I will see what I can do...]
What prompted you to join Thea-Bel?
Short answer? A Halloween party. [Anyone who knows me should know how much I love to talk and how passionate I am about Thea-Bel]
Is there anything else you want people to know?
Not at the moment.
Is there anywhere besides Thea-Bel that people can get your items?
Not specifically at this time. Outside of Thea-Bel I generally rely on word of mouth.
Do you do custom work?
I'm willing to take custom orders from time to time. Just ask!
I really hope that you enjoyed learning more about Calindy. Don't forget that you can get a set of her beautiful coasters when you place a $50 order this month.
